Research conducted last year by GFI shows that nearly 35 percent of SMBs surveyed use a combination of email security on an internal mail server and at the gateway. According to Gartner, buyers’ requirements are more likely to be met if vendors offer a wider choice of solutions. The IT research firm concluded, “Although software is the primary installed [email security] solution and appliances are the most common new platform, virtual appliances are increasing in appeal as organizations consolidate onto common hardware platforms, such as blade servers. …Vendors that can offer a broader range of solutions are more likely to meet buyers' future requirements.”1
