GFI EventsManager™ 2012 Helps SMBs Detect Security Breaches and Achieve Regulatory Compliance

December 06, 2011 - 12:00

New features make it easier for IT administrators to log user activity on their network, helping to ensure data protection and compliance with a wide array of privacy regulations

GFI Software today launched GFI EventsManager 2012. The log management software includes several new features that enable small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) to better track user activity on their networks, helping to protect sensitive information from internal and external threats. The ability to log and analyze user activity is critical for IT admins to remain confident that information contained within their databases is only accessed for legitimate, authorized purposes in accordance with corporate policies and government regulations.

“As evidenced by the number of data beaches in the news this year, protecting confidential customer and corporate data can be a challenge for companies of all sizes,” said Lucian Mocanasu, product manager, GFI Software. “With GFI EventsManager, IT admins can continuously monitor who is accessing sensitive data, as well as how and when they are doing so. Using this intelligence, they can detect, archive and quickly address  suspicious activity from someone outside the organization while simultaneously ensuring employee access rights and privileges are enforced – all of which enhance data protection  and compliance with stringent privacy regulations.”

GFI EventsManager now boasts a new file-based storage engine, which can store and process more event log data than ever before in a single database. Unlike other products, this new storage engine is based on dynamic columns, which are used to break down events into more meaningful pieces of data.

“GFI EventsManager is designed with powerful analytical capabilities that automatically identify the most important events and break down that data so it can be quickly and easily analyzed and processed,” added Mocanasu. “In other words, with EventsManager, IT and security professionals no longer need to be log management experts to monitor their network efficiently.”

Additionally, all user activity and events from all sources, irrespective of log type, are now combined into one single browser. These new features provide SMBs with a much clearer and more comprehensive picture of what is going on inside their networks, and in combination with new drill-down and global search capabilities, make analyzing and reporting user activity easier than ever before. Using these capabilities, IT administrators can monitor traffic coming from inside and outside the network, identify and remediate suspicious activity and adjust privileges and access levels where appropriate.

Additional product enhancements include:

  • Database encryption– Encrypt all event log data stored in the database for an additional layer of defense against threats and increased compliance with privacy regulations.
  • Customized reporting– Create reports in HTML or PDF formats with custom layouts and generate reports directly from the browser to reduce audit prep time and easily demonstrate compliance to auditors.
  • Scan non-standard text logs – Scan different logs from text files that have well defined schema, such as a list of values – useful for scanning proprietary logs generated by different applications or special equipment.
  • Faster queries and reports – Benefit from simplified data management and database maintenance, and experience faster query and report response times, even when running on larger volumes of event data.
