LanGuard 2014 R2 Subscription Licensing change

GFI LanGuard Subscription Licensing

GFI LangGuard 2014 R2 (version 11.3) as well as future versions have changed the licensing model to a subscription based. Versions of the product prior to this release used the SMA (Service Maintenance Agreement) model.

The reason for this change

GFI Software wants to stress the value and importance of product updates for LanGuard as being integral to the product. Using a perpetual license with an expired SMA allowed the product to seemingly function, but stopped the product from receiving updates, and thus made using the product an actual security vulnerability! This approach works against the spirit of the product:
  • GFI LanGuard is not only a software application, but a service that has to be continuously updated in order to provide protection.
  • In previous versions, the product continued to work after SMA expiry (although the product updates were disabled) thus offering a false sense of security.
No pricing changes
  • First year subscription pricing remains the same amount as previous main price.
  • Subsequent years subscription price remains same amount as previous SMA price.

What happens when the subscription expires?

In LangGuard 2014 R2 (version 11.3) and later versions, if the subscription is not renewed, after a  10 day grace period, the entire product vulnerability assessment and patch management functionality will not be available anymore and your network security will be in danger. 

How does this affect the upgrade process?

If you currently use a valid license for LangGuard 2014 with a valid SMA, LangGuard 2014 R2 (version 11.3) and later will continue working with the same license for the remaining period of the SMA contract.
If you currently use a license for LangGuard 2014 with an expired SMA, you will need to ensure you renew your subscription before upgrading to LangGuard 2014 R2 (version 11.3)
