The way in which you remove users from the user configured list in GFI MailEssentials depends on the installation of the software. But before you start it’s important to enable the software’s tracing option. This will verify the number of licensed users being counted by GFI MailEssentials.
To do this open the switchboard, select tracing and tick the check box labelled tracing. With that done you can get on to removing users.
If GFI MailEssentials is installed in Active Directory mode, you can remove users by either disabling or deleting them from Active Directory users and computers on the domain controller. You can verify this by checking the content of the log file usercntad.log.
When it comes to installations on a Microsoft Exchange server, you’ll find users in the Microsoft Exchange Information Store. During installation administrators can choose to retrieve users from Active Directory, with all mailboxes on the Microsoft Exchange Information Store counting for licensing purposes. Therefore, you can remove users by removing Microsoft Exchange mailboxes. The log file usercntvsapi.txt has this information.
Finally, when GFI MailEssentials is installed in SMTP mode, users are deleted through the GFI MailEssentials Configuration settings. Select General, then Properties and click on the User Manager tab. You can remove licensed users from there. The log file usercntado.txt will verify the number of users.
How do you know which installation of GFI MailEssentials you have? Again, in the GFI MailEssentials configuration settings elect General, then Properties. If the User Manager tab is available, then GFI MailEssentials is installed in SMTP mode. Otherwise it is installed in Active Directory or Microsoft Exchange mode. After removing users allow about one hour for users to be re-counted.
